Firms confused over climate change

22nd June 2010

A study has revealed that the majority of British firms think environmental policy is unclear and there is a lack of cohesive thinking between climate change agencies and the Government.

The PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP study found that while 94% of organisations questioned said they anticipated environmental law affecting them in the next two to three years, two thirds said they felt environmental policy was ambiguous.

Nearly seven out of 10 (68%) companies claim they want the Government to take the lead in tackling climate change through policy and regulations.

However, of the 50 UK businesses questioned, only 18% said they felt there was cohesive thinking between Government departments, bodies and agencies concerned with climate change.

And just one in five were confident that money raised from environmental taxes would be reinvested into green or environmental projects.

Mark Schofield, global leader of sustainability and climate change tax at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, said: “Business really wants to engage in this agenda and help Government form good policy, which achieves the desired effect.”
