Pompey employees win compensation

23rd July 2010

Portsmouth FC have been ordered to pay more than £100,000 to employees who lost their jobs when the club went into administration.

An employment tribunal sitting in Southampton heard how the club failed to use a 30-day consultation period before making the nine employees redundant.

The employees were informed that they were losing their jobs in a face-to-face interview with the club’s administrator in March.

Seven of the nine former staff claimed unfair dismissal, and five of those also claimed the additional award. Two others claimed just the protective award.

Judge Richard Byre upheld and complaints and ordered the club to pay the claimants compensation ranging from £3,941 to £29,538.

Some 85 people were made redundant from the club when it went into administration, from a total of around 600.
