Machine kills man working inside it

A 50-year-old maintenance worker was killed when machinery he was fixing was switched on by its operator while he was still inside it.

Clive Hall was carrying out maintenance work more than four years ago inside a cut-and-crease machine used in the manufacture of packaging. He was killed instantly when bars which transfer cardboard through the equipment struck him on the head.

Glossop Carton and Print, the firm for which the man worked, was handed a £50,000 fine at Birmingham Crown Court for failing to ensure the safety of its staff. Mr Hall had worked at the factory in Platt Street, Padfield, for less than two months when the accident happened in September 2006.

At an earlier hearing at Chesterfield Magistrate’s Court on 21 May 2010, Glossop Carton and Print Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 by putting workers at risk. As well as the fine the company was ordered to pay £76,150 in prosecution costs.
