Hounslow Social Club gets planning permission

26th May 2011

A social club in West London is finally celebrating being given permission to build a new centre after submitting plans three times.

Hounslow Social Club had told local newspaper the Hounslow Chronicle it might have to shut up shop if the bid to build a new structure on its Grove Road site was rejected again.

The developer, St George, altered the plans so more affordable homes were included and the number of flats was lower, with 29 now planned. Hounslow Council’s sustainable development committee approved the proposals last week.

The new building will have five storeys, with Hounslow Social Club holding a 999-year lease on the ground floor. Club bosses now have to find an alternative home so that construction can start. That could happen as early as October and should take slightly over a year.

Snooker legends Alex Higgins and Jimmy White have played at the club, which hosts two tables and holds regular gigs and karaoke nights. It was formed in 1929 and will revert back to its original name - Hounslow Staff Social Club – when the new building opens.

The club originally opened on the site which is next door to its current home, Juniper Court, but moved 12 years ago. Before a new committee took over about two years ago, the club had debts of £90,000 but it has said it should be back in the black this year.
