Personal injury rules up for debate
30th June 2011The Government has announced it is looking into the issue of referral fees in personal injury cases after “strong concerns” were raised.
Justice Minister Jonathan Djanogly said the Government would bring forward proposals “in due course” after several MPs hit out over the practice, where the details of people involved in an accident are sold on to personal injury lawyers.
Labour former justice secretary Jack Straw and Lib Dem Sir Alan Beith, who is chairman of the Justice Select Committee, both raised concerns ahead of the second reading of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill.
Mr Djanogly acknowledged there had been a “disgraceful episode of referral fees in relation to miners’ compensation”, which was raised in the House of Commons by Tory Jonathan Evans.
The minister said that all defendants hit with claims funded by conditional fee arrangements would face reduced legal costs under measures in the Bill.
