MoD payout after Iraq death

22nd July 2011

The family of an 18-year-old who drowned in Iraq more than eight years ago has received compensation from the UK Government’s Ministry of Defence (MoD), it has emerged.

According to lawyers acting on behalf of Saeed Shabram’s family, a sum of £100,000 was awarded to the teenager’s relatives at the High Court.

The family of Mr Shabram alleged that British soldiers forced both he and his cousin, Menem Akaili, into a river not far from Basra in May 2003.

The man’s relatives also alleged that this occurred after they had been led at gunpoint down a jetty.

A spokesman for the MoD said the department’s sympathies continue to lie with the family of Mr Shabram.

He added: “When compensation claims are received by the Ministry of Defence they are considered on the basis of whether or not there is a legal liability to pay compensation.”
