Woman mistakenly told of ‘miscarriage’

16th August 2011

A woman who was told she had miscarried her baby discovered two weeks later that it was alive and well after she demanded a second ultrascan.

Pregnant Chelsea Muff, 32, who has two children, was grieving for a fortnight after Bradford Royal Infirmary said she had lost her baby.

But on returning two weeks later and requesting another scan she was informed of the mistake.

Now four months pregnant, Ms Muff expressed her shock and upset at the ordeal.

Speaking to her local newspaper, Bradford’s Telegraph and Argus, she said: “After the first scan a consultant came in and confirmed that I had miscarried and gave me the option to book in for an evacuation procedure, take a tablet there and then that would bring labour, or wait for it to come away naturally.

“I chose to wait. If I had taken the tablet I could have terminated my baby and never have known.”

Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS foundation trust said: “We sympathise with Miss Muff for the distress she has experienced. The Foundation Trust is taking all necessary actions to investigate the circumstances and has contacted Miss Muff directly to discuss her concerns.”
