CBI call over redundancy rules

21st February 2012

A leading employers group has told Business Secretary Vince Cable that the 90-day period for consultancy during redundancies of 100 workers or more should be cut back.

Mr Cable has invited views from interested parties as part of his bid to reform workplace law, and the CBI has called for the redundancy consultancy timescale to be reduced to 30 days.

Reform on collective redundancy rules has been targeted as part of the wider reforms by Mr Cable, who asked for opinions on whether the 90-day consultation rule made the redundancy process more painful.

CBI officials, in the body’s submission to the proposals, said that a 90-day period was too long, adding that the uncertainty was prolonged for workers and that firms were obstructed from getting their business back on track.

The reform plans also include changes for rules around tribunals and criminal record checks.
