Match-funding by employers in payroll charity-giving schemes jumped by more than a quarter in the last financial year, figures show. Data from the Association of Payroll Giving Organisations (APGO) reveals a 27% increase from £5.9 million in 2011/12 to £7.5 million in 2012/13. It means the total amount donated to charity by employers and employees through payroll giving was a massive £162.5 million, representing a jump of £38.6 million, or 24%, on the previous 12-month period. HM Revenue & Customs, meanwhile, announced in January that it had revised its figure for the amount given by employees through payroll giving in 2012/13 from £124 million to £155 million – meaning there was a year-on-year rise of 31% overall. “More employers than ever are taking ownership of payroll giving,” said Penny Tapping, treasurer of the APGO. “I hope this is a trend that will continue, rather than a spike in the figures.” The proportion of employers that pay the administration charge on donations on behalf of employees, which ensures that all of the employee’s donation goes to the cause, increased from 33% in 2011/12 to 48% last year.
