Charity Commission takes action following revelations of extremism in TV documentary

Charity Commission opens statutory inquiries into two charities and de-registers a third following revelations of extremism in TV documentary.

A TV documentary aired in mid-February centred around three separate charities, each accused of extremist and racist views. One charity, The Steadfast Trust, had already been removed from the Register of Charities by the time the documentary aired. However, two other charities are now the subject of Charity Commission statutory inquiries.

The main issues raised by the program focused on the actions and language of employees and volunteers of these charities, and particularly at events run by these charities. Trustees must take extra care to explain to those associated with their charity about the need to conduct themselves appropriately at all times. Trustees should also ensure that their charity has suitable training and structures in place to ensure that events it runs do not inadvertently provide a platform or a forum for any extremist and/or racist views.
