Good Divorce Week 2021 – Putting your children first

Each year, Resolution holds a “Good Divorce Week” and this year it is running from the 29th November to the 3rd December.  With no fault divorce on the horizon, many practitioners who are members of Resolution are hopeful that the stigma attached to divorce will be a distant memory and that clients can have an amicable and non- confrontational divorce.

Resolution was founded in 1982 by a group of family lawyers who believed in a non – confrontational approach to family law practice. The aim was to produce positive outcomes for those engaging in the justice system. Solicitors who are members of Resolution work with families and individuals to resolve family law issues in a constructive way.

At IBB Law, our family solicitors are members of Resolution which means they adhere to a code of practice as follows:

  • Reduce or manage any conflict and confrontation.
  • Support and encourage families to put the best interests of any children first.
  • Act with honesty, integrity and objectivity.
  • Help clients understand and manage the potential long term financial and emotional consequences of decisions.
  • Listen to and treat everyone with respect and without judgement.
  • Use experienced knowledge to guide clients through the options available.

This year, Resolution are focused on embracing a “child – focused” approach to Good Divorce Week. The campaign is more poignant than ever this year as many couples have been under immense pressure during the pandemic. This pressure plus the stress related to dealing with a divorce is often overbearing for families and this naturally also impacts any children to the marriage.

So how can you have a “Good Divorce”? Here are some top tips below:

  1. Instruct a Resolution practitioner. At IBB Family Law we pride ourselves on our Resolution focused approach. By instructing a Solicitor that adopts that approach it can often reduce conflict and in turn reduce your costs. Court will always be the last resort in terms of strategy and will be avoided unless absolute necessary.
  2. We understand that a conciliatory approach is not always possible, but you know that instructing a Resolution solicitor they will always support an amicable settlement, with the needs of your children at the forefront.
  3. Consider discussing alternatives to the court process with your solicitor. These can include mediation, round table meetings, arbitration or a collaborative process.
  4. Familiarise yourself with Resolution’s “Parenting Through Separation” guide which is a free resource aimed at helping parents to achieve a constructive approach through separation. The guide is free and can be accessed on the following link:
