Good Divorce Week – Is there such a thing as a good divorce?

Each year, Resolution holds a “Good Divorce Week” and this year it is running from the 30th November to the 4th December.  Resolution is a community of family justice professionals who work with families and individuals to resolve family law issues in a constructive way.  As Resolution members would say “it’s a better way”.

Resolution was founded in 1982 by a group of family lawyers who believed a non-confrontational approach to family law issues would produce better outcomes for those engaging in the family justice system.  Resolution members are signed up to a code of practice which in summary embodies the following:

  • Reduce or manage any conflict and confrontation.
  • Support and encourage families to put the best interests of any children first.
  • Act with honesty, integrity and objectivity.
  • Help clients understand and manage the potential long term financial and emotional consequences of decisions.
  • Listen to and treat everyone with respect and without judgement.
  • Use experienced knowledge to guide clients through the options available.

So, a good starting point for a “good divorce” is to instruct a Resolution practitioner. At IBB Family Law we pride ourselves on our Resolution focused approach. Court will always be the last resort in terms of strategy and will be avoided unless absolute necessary.

A conciliatory approach is not always possible but you know that instructing a Resolution solicitor means that they will try their very best to promote an amicable settlement with one eye on the future relationship which most couples will have to endure, usually as a result of having children together.

Most people will feel very stressed and worried at the prospect of instructing divorce lawyers, but the process can certainly be made easier by instructing the right lawyers. The label of a “good divorce” I think is a bit of a stretch but “a resolution focused divorce” is certainly achievable.

At IBB Law we are committed to ensuring that clients feel that we are the right fit for their family law issues. Therefore, we speak to clients on the telephone before asking them to part with any fees so that they feel confident that we are the right people to assist with such a personal and emotional side of the law. We also offer fixed cost initial meetings so that clients have a clear idea of costs and can then use the initial meeting to feel confident in their choice of lawyer.
