Free Portable Criminal Record checks for volunteers to be introduced

In the spring of 2013, the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) will be introducing free portable criminal records checks for volunteers. The new update service will mean that, instead of applying for a new criminal record check each time an employee or volunteer applies for a job, once the DBS has provided a certificate an employer or charity will be able to check online to find out whether the existing certificate is still up to date.

The update service will be free for volunteers, with a small annual subscription fee for paid employees, which will be less than the cost of a new criminal record check.
