Government spending review – further cuts for the Charity Commission

The Charity Commission is facing a further cut in its funding – by 6 percent (£1m), as a result of the government’s spending review. It would appear that further job losses are inevitable at the Charity Commission and it remains to be seen how this will impact on the Commission’s ability to regulate the sector effectively. This announcement comes amid on-going debate in the sector press about whether or not charities should pay a fee to file their Annual Return etc. Although the Commission has, to date, indicated that it has no plans to introduce such fees, whether it will be able to sustain a totally free service in the future remains to be seen.
