Judge orders man to pay depressed wife

A High Court judge has ordered a “very rich” international businessman to pay his ex-wife a large sum of money so she can continue living a “very affluent lifestyle”.

Mrs Justice Baron said the 45-year-old woman, who had been married to him for 11 years, was entitled to continue living such a lifestyle and instructed the 48-year-old man to fork out £4 million plus £150,000 per year for the remainder of her life. That annual amount is reportedly to cover costs for clothes, beauty treatment, pets and domestic help and the judge described the woman’s mental health state as “perilous”, adding that she would never be able to work and deserved to be cared for.

The hearing at the Family Division of the High Court in London detailed how she had “retreated from the world” in a £2.5 million London flat with her cat and had recently purchased a “suicide pack” on the internet.

The woman, who was born in Saudi Arabia and attended boarding schools in England and Switzerland, is said to have “wanted for nothing” during her marriage. Mrs Justice Baron stressed that neither the woman nor the man should be identified.
