Teenage Cancer Trust Skypad unit wins award

Teenage Cancer Trust‘s Skypad unit, built at Cardiff and Vale University Hospital, has been announced as the winner of the Judge’s Special Award at the Building Better Healthcare Awards 2009. Designed by ORMS Architects and Designers in collaboration with teenagers, their families and clinical staff, the Skypad offers true innovation in patient experience and is the first facility of its kind in Wales, providing a centre of clinical excellence for inpatient and outpatient care.

Paul Brampton, head of IBB’s construction team, explains: “The Skypad is a unique building, supported on stilts between and above existing structures, and is an early exemplar of TCT‘s ambitious and ongoing programme of giving every teenager with cancer in the UK access to a specialist unit. As always it was a pleasure to advise TCT, and work in partnership with the NHS Trust and the project team. We feel very privileged to be associated with their success.”
